I noticed this coin on ebay just before the auction ended. I had already won a counterfeit 8R from the same seller and I always check what is coming up with the same seller. I look for odd coins with no bids that I like and which might be under priced. I checked the coin in Krause and thought I had a winner, Here is the coin:

In checking the coin listings after I won, I came across a serious discrepancy in Krause. The mint mark is called RARE with no price listed in the 2007 34th edition but in earlier editions it is the other mint mark that is scarce and this mint is common.

Anyone know for sure which is which?

Just proves even if you "HAVE THE BOOK" it can be WRONG!

I have been doing more research - I believe the rarity is the combination of Date - Official Initials. The mint official changed in 1913 to CB but some 1912 dies have CB - that is the rare combination in the 20K and it makes more sense to me to have 1913 initials on a 1912 coin as the rarity.

hmm, in my 36th edition no value is given. This must be a rather rare variety. Very good catch, Swamperbob!

Here's a Heritage auction with a 1912 of the same initials:

The 1912 is listed as rare with a mintage of 13,333.00, the 1913 is also included in the same mintage figures and listed Proof for $250.

hmm, interesting. So if this is not actually a rare coin, then why is it that no value is listed in newer editions of Krause?

Archraz That is the key to this post.

The recent editions of Krause have introduced an error. The 1912 version of the 15 Kopec with this mint official's initials is COMMON (the MS65 example above proves that). The official had been at the mint for many years so 1912 was just a continuation of his service listed as ending in 1913. In 1913 he was replaced - but apparently one die used in 1912 had the NEW initials. Perhaps the die sinkers jumped the gun a bit. That 1912 with the NEW initials is the rare combination according to the older Krause listings. In the new Krause check the 20 Kopec and you see what I mean.

I think what we have here is a simple typo in Krause and I didn't know any better when bidding. It is a risk you take anytime you use a book with a series of coins with which you are not PERSONALLY FAMILIAR! Periodically I have to re-learn lessons.

The joke is on ME - but it is a good lesson for everyone to take with them.

swamperbob- Well, I wouldn't say that the joke is necessarily on you. After all, you did get a pretty nice coin out of the deal.

Hey Swamperbob, thanks for finally debunking this little confusing myth. I have come across my third of this date with the EB initials. Luckily, ebay buyers seem to know the deal, a quick search did not show a significant premium on most examples.

All's well that ends well--once again, I learned something from your posts.
