Since early U.S. gold sells for such huge sums, I thought it would be neat to own a coin that might have circulated in this country during America's early years. What would you pay for a problem-free VF or EF escudo?

I would imagine that one could be bought for $250-300 dollars from a reputable dealer.

Depending upon your definition of America's early years - you should be able to get a fairly nice Escudo from the 1820s or 1830s for slightly over melt. The colonial types are more expensive than the later hand and book types which did see use in the USA.
