Hi, all ~

I'm a new kid on the block, wondering what recommendations you might have as to the best upgrade from my old beat-up Renniks 13th edition, which looks to be about a 1982 release. I got the 19th edition twenty years later, but was disappointed to see the NZ tokens were no longer covered.

Thought I'd found what I needed last night in my 19th-century KM, but closer inspection reveals that all the tokens are covered by type only. I guess we all know how important varieties can be to the value of a coin or token.

So, if anyone out there has some ideas, I'd really appreciate your sharing! My specs are pretty straightforward. I need to cover values for Australia & NZ tradesmen's tokens, by variety...not just type. Does such a thing exist anymore?

Many thanks in advance!

Tom

I just ran across mention of this one today so I have not read it, but you could check it out: http://www.principality-hutt-river....atalogue.htm

Maybe someone here has it and can give particulars on whether it has information on varieties as well.

Thanks very much for this lead.

I'll start by looking into the "compiler's" credentials, I guess,
and whether there are any reviews out there on the Net.

I notice that the back of the CD cover refers to "18th-century"
tokens, which would be a whole new field of collecting for most of us.

I just found coinweb.com, which appears to be a news aggregator, so that will be my starting point.

I appreciate the tip.
Best ~
Tom

I'm afraid that the short answer to your question is "No, it doesn't exist anymore".

The Krause catalogue is the closest thing you'll find to a regularly updated price guide for Australasian tokens; all of the Australian books have been "once-off" or irregular affairs. Renniks used to have a token section of the catalogue, but in the most recent editions it's been dropped in favour of coverage of the plethora of "modern junk" the two Australian mints are churning out. They may be planning a separate volume that just has the tokens in it; we'll have to wait and see if it eventuates.

All the modern Australian catalogues that mention tokens only have Australian tokens; since the 1980's, very few people on either side of "the Ditch" have considered Australian and New Zealand tokens to be part of the same series, despite their obvious similarities and common history. Collecting New Zealand coinage in general isn't as popular here as it used to be.

I think the 21st edition of Renniks (2004) was the last edition to feature the Australian tokens. The coin club fellow I mentioned in your other thread is quite dismissive of this listing; it has numerous errors and omissions in attribution and rarity/value, and uses its own numbering system (a variation of Heyde numbers) rather than the more widely used Andrews numbers.

Thanks, Sap...not particularly the news I'd hoped for, but helpful nonetheless.

I guess I'll continue to use the 13th-edition Renniks I have, which is near-exhaustive on this topic, for ID and to help me figure out varieties, and then I'll begin to work on prices realized to get at current valuations.

I used to do a fair amount of business via Coin Trends monthly mail-bid auctions (out of Ballarat), so will start there. I don't think I'll begin eBaying this material until early next year.

I appreciate your help.
Best ~

Supposedly Greg McDonald is writing a book about them. But it seems to be one of these 'released at the end of the year' things that some people do. They just never specify the end of which year it will be released.
