I do not.. but like I pm'd Nancy, I can do the PDF. No need for a 'professional printer'! As a matter of fact, the book might not even have to be cut up to do it, depending on the type of book/binding. I can scan to text recognition and the original can be fairly murky and crooked and it's fine. If pictures run to the inside margin, that might be a problem, as those would need to be as intact as possible, but there are other ways to do it.

If he can get just one copy and take some good, high res pictures of each page, and email them, I can work from those too.. no need to mail the one copy and hold our collective breaths while it's in transit. Just an idea

I wonder if anyone has tried Alibris.com? Its database is world-wide and quite extensive.

Yes, that's what I thought as well.. and immediately got paranoid someone was going to check the book out, lose it or something else so hopped right on it.

I've been known to jump in with both feet before my brain kicks in.. it's gotten me into trouble a few times. Thanks for being so understanding

I'll keep you posted on the progress, if any. I haven't heard from them other than an automated email saying "thanks".

Grr..

"They" being the National Library of Australia. I just went back through old mails - you said you forwarded the email to John (the writer's son). All they need is the copyright holder's permission.

Me to you 12/16/08:
I received an email from the Australia library and they won't copy over 10% of the book without permission from the copyright holder. So if he wants, he can give permission, or he can probably do the request himself at the library.

Email from the library:

Message from National Library of Australia regarding your following request.
NOTES TO CLIENT: Unable to copy whole book. This material is still in copyright and therefore we can only photocopy one chapter or 10% for you, however, you can organise an interlibrary loan through your local or institutional library. If you would like us to photocopy a chapter or 10% for you, please create a new request for the required material.

Hey, that all looks like good news to me.

So all John needs to do is contact the National Library of Australia & prove that he now holds the copyright, and it should be smooth sailing from there on.

Richard, We must have both been replying at the same time but you beat me to it. I'll try & contact John & see if he's had time to get anything organised yet.

We don't need to be in Oz to request chapters. If there's a need, I am sure we could all pitch in, get 1 chapter each, and put 'em together
