I have the first 1 of the series, the Mawson coin, but I don't think I will collect the others as I generally tend to stay away from Perth Mint releases.

Nice coin Lim. Now I want to know......is there a site somewhere I could go to to find out how these colored coins are minted? Very intriguing. Most of them don't appeal to me but I am interested in how they are done. I've never heard of a US coin with these colored images, so is this something limited to a certain Australian mint?

Some of the coins, such as the rooster and the snake are very appealing, these coins with the images are a whole nother animal to me.

Thanks
Margaret

Hi Margaret, what is that beautiful coin that you are using as your avatar - it is stunning to say the least. Wish they made them like that here. How does one obtain one I wonder? Cheers!

With regard to colouring, both mints here (Royal Australian Mint and Perth Mint) have added colour to coins at one time or another. The Perth Mint tends to do it quite commonly these days. I am not a big fan of it as I think it tends to cheapen the look of the coin and make it more a novelty than anything else. The RAM, when they do add colour, tends to use selective gold plating which I find more palatable.
Here is the link to the home page of the Perth Mint which may help you to find out more information about the process:

At the end of the day, what one collects and from which Mint is very much a choice left to each of us to make.

Both Mints have to compete for our dollars and will produce issues that they think will achieve that goal. The RAM is a government owned Mint and as a consequence has the advantage of minting circulating issues. The PM is State owned and can only mint NCLT's or coins under approval from foreign countries.

Having said all that, both Mints have issued winners as well as their fair share of lemons.

It is not correct to say Quote : The RAM, when they do add colour, tends to use selective gold plating which I find more palatable.
Unquote.

Have a look at these ones from the RAM :

In all my collecting years, I have come across collectors who swear that they will never collect or even own one coin from the PM and yet within their collections they have sovereigns and half sovereigns from the Perth Mint....

Sadly the Perth Mint tends to put out stuff which is more akin to the Franklin Mint than anything else. Lots more losers than winners from them.

I will stand by my quote as the RAM has released more coins with selective gold plating than colourised ones

My Avatar is an American Gold Eagle, courtesy of this coin forum. You can see/purchase them here https://www.usmint.gov , just click on "Buy online" and it will take you to all US coins.

Lim,
thanks for the other pics, going through my Aussie coin book, I see several that are quite nice, which of course means I will eventually have to buy one. I'm guessing these are made solely for collectors because I can't imagine these would survive circulation very long.

Thanks for the links posted too. Two mints, lotta coins. a person could go broke collecting!

Thanks
Margaret

Margaret...all the coloured coins depicted above are from Proof coin sets. Have a look at the BU/GEM rendition of the same coins. Which is the better of the two
