There is a new entrant in the race for best (worst) Chinese forger.

http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-1777-SPAIN...330369251139

The coin made me laugh when I first saw it. It is totally unbelievable as a Chilean 4R look at the King's smile.

But on a technical note the forger also used a modern S font to create the mint mark.

It is however worth a quick look to see all of his items. EVERY ONE is a well known forgery - most are cast.

I hope he gets NO BIDS.

Although with those prices he might not get any bids... but he might get a bid for a coin that somebody has been looking for a while.

It is sad to read those postive feedbacks that he received from selling those fakes.

swamperbob- Thanks for pointing this out. Very interesting. While the Spanish colonial coins that he has for sale are clearly fake, I must say that some of the others, such as the German thalers are of higher quality. I have a feeling that some of those will really fool many an untrained eye.

Archraz I copied all of his auctions because EVERY ONE is a fake. Once you see a few more identical copies they won't look so good to you.

There is no reason I can see that the seller should be on ebay. Sadly, ebay's mechanism to report fakes has changed and reporting fakes is more difficult, buried farther in the links, and no longer permits comments from the person submitting the report. ebay is indirectly providing protection for these sellers as they make the reporting more cumbersome.

I see 3 cast taler listings: an augsburg piece (330369246280) that has been offered as a counterfeit more than 75 times on ebay the past 2 years, an austrian taler (330369246940), and a german taler (330369245376). I honestly suspect there are more fake examples of the Augsburg taler in existance now than original pieces - literally thousands of examples of this fake "circulating".

It is all disgusting.

I need to correct my last post - the 'Report' link is plainly evident in the ebay listing so it is still easy to report these fake auctions. I suspect the report function is similar to a fake thermostat installed to make the room occupant feel more empowered, but that is a different story. All other comments still stand.

Use the link in my sig.

You can't just say "This coin is fake" though, that won't work. You have to give them a reason.

Well, the 8 coins closed and 5 of the 8 sold including the 4R. The total sale was $450 plus $115 in postage for 5 junk Chinese fakes worth $1 each.

The 4R brought $152.51 which is obscene!

To the un-trained eye like mine...is it possible to detect a fake? I see a lot of coins in the open markets (Mexico) and some I can tell are faked...but some...I'm not so sure.
