I acquired (in a lot) a National Small Bore Rifle Assn. Medal with the back dated 1949. I assume it is Of Australian origin because of the wonderfully detailed Kangaroo on the front. There is a Coat of Arms at the top, two sets (of 3) standing rifles as well. It is approx. 36mm in dia. and very thick. Sorry, I have not yet learned to size pictures to fit this website. Any info you have would be appreciated. :-)

G'day,
"Small Bore Rifle" - this used to mean .22" calibre rimfire. Was popular because it wasn't noisy; you didn't need an enormous range to safely fire on; and the rifles and ammunition were a lot less expensive than full bore. And some say that hitting your target with a .22 over 100 metres requires almost as much skill as with a full bore at a much greater distance.

The kangaroo is, I think, an Australian icon, and I would guess that his presence would pin this medal to a particular origin.

- go to the left of this screen, down a bit is the heading "Tutorials", and below that "Uploading Photos" - click on that.
Even I have managed it, so I'm pretty sure most everyone else can breeze through it.
Tip: first crop your picture so that only your coin or medal fills the pic. We don't much care about backgrounds.

B.S.A. used to make rifles (maybe they still do ...), very popular in Oz.
They also made motorcycles.
The standing rifles were the BSA trademark.

B.S.A. is actually British Sporting Arms, they made rifles long before getting into motorcycles, which imho are the coolest bikes ever made! '62 Gold Star...mmmmm

sorry to correct you Brian, but BSA stands for "Birmingham Small Arms Company"
see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSA_(motorcycle)
When I was in the Army, the MPs were using BSA 350cc singles, but they weren't well-regarded.

Doh! I knew that, honest! I don't know where the British came from. Were the firearms anything like the bikes, really cool and attractive, but totally unreliable?

I thought BSA stood for Boy Scouts of America.
