Hi, Was planning to collect these State Quarters and came across the price of the 1999 silver proof sets which I find way outrageous at $299. I'm seeing some being sold at ebay though for $180 which I find a still a little bit steep. Do you advice buying now? Are fakes of these rampant because I'm seeing a lot of blank 1999 silver proof sets (with the COA) being sold at ebay for $15? Thanks!

I don't know what you mean by "Blank proof sets," but the price of the 99 silver proof set is way out of line. $350 in the Red Book. I don't know why it's so high, but I'd wait. Joe

The 1999 silver proofs are by far the keys of the State Quarter series, that is the reason for the extreme value. Be glad you can get them under $300 now, they used to be over $400 just a few years ago before the modern market softened a bit. I do not see these sets dropping much more though, they will probably settle around $200.

Last check at the local coin shop was $189, Mint sets (any type) seem to go for much higher on e-bay than at the coin shop.
Soon for me it will be the last set I need, I too will be paying for it.
Not that I want too, but to complete the series...
Well, you know.

you will have to pay a high premium on the 1999 silver proof sets because they are the key date of the whole series. That was the first year of the series and there werent many Silver proof sets to go around because not allot of people collected them when they first came out either because they didn't know about them or just lack of interest, but now everyone wants a set ans they are in short supply. The prices you mentioned is about what you can expect to pay if you want the set and 180.00 is a very good price for the set. I think what you are talking about with the empty case with coa and box is ones that have been cracked out and either sold individually or sent to a TPG for grading and they still have the case they came in. People who have individual coins buy these so they can place them back in the Original Packaging and they can cherry pick the best coins for the set instead of having one with spots and all the rest beautiful (one bad coin can ruin the look of the whole set)

i know one 1999 silver proof set I bought and returned it because the cent had a few spots on it that I could not stand to look at. all the other coins were perfect besides the cent but I could not stop staring at those spots I thought I was nuts at first returning the whole set because of a few spots.

Unfortunately there are some people putting clad coins in silver packaging and figuring most set buyers will not crack them open. Usually if they get caught they just say sorry and refund the money Over the last 2 years I have reported a couple of them

Do you want the quarters for an album? If you do, the secret to getting a better deal than buying the lens is to buy the coins individually. They go from anywhere between $20-$40 a coin. I filled the slots in my album for $130. If you are patient ...watch ebay auctions that end at odd times, you can pick them off 1 by 1 and save some cash.

All I want is the half, so I'll buy one individually. Might suggest that for the quarters too, as someone already mentioned.

Too bad that these theories/values will NEVER apply to the inaugural year of the America the Beautiful St. Park Qtrs. starting next year in 2010...... You don't hear anybody waiting with baited breath to purchase the 2010 Silver Proof Set for these same "potential" reasons.... Though I will get this Set next year..(i want to get one every year)...but with none of these expectations or hopes that it will mirror what the 1999 Set did....... The ridiculous numbers in which they will produce this Set will be enough to kill it.....

$180 would be a fair price to me as well. Just would suggest that you know who you are buying from and possibly who they bought from. Check descriptions and ask questions to make sure they have not been cracked and cherrypicked. And would also suggest a return agreement if they are not what is described and/or questions answered by the seller.

they issued over 800000 thousand of the 99 silver set I think. And that's scarce and expensive. Will that theory apply to Lincoln coin and chronicles set, only 50000 thousand of them issued?
