Machine doubling, very common on the Washington series. If you check the design elements, you'll notice they all have soft rounded curves to allow easy release from the die. The mint mark however has much straighter sides that often stuck in the die causing the push to one side or the other during ejection.

Adannak44, this link is very helpful... my eyes are all skewed from trying to identify these.

Thank you for all the inputs. Yes, it looks like machine doubled but only on the mint mark the rest are normal?

The letters under the mint mark is also distorted. Probably opposite on the obverse could be affected in that area.

Knew I had one, just took a while to locate it. Note the 3 separate notches on each corner of the mint mark.

Nice, and great photos everyone. I'm going through all my Washingtons very slowly looking for varieties. It is tough on the eyes to say the least! Eventually I'll pass photos etc... along to Jose. I think it is great what he is doing and feel it really highlights the complexity of the series. All too often people brush aside Washingtons as boring but it really is a very dynamic series... and I'm talking 32-98. It is really interesting to identify varieties and trace back to the mint what took place.
