Hello, I have been watching the forum from the sidelines without participating in it. I see a lot of benefits and have seen a lot of posts that suggest great knowledge. That is why I have decided to get your opinion on this coin, and perhaps a couple of others later. My interest, being a Girl, is definitely GOLD. Love the color. My main collector interest is Canadian Coinage from 1967 back to 1858. But recently I have purchased a number of Coins as one lot. One of the coins is this 2 Rupie piece. Can anyone please tell me what is is worth and perhaps an estimated Grade for it? Thank you all for your help Coingirl

Krause lists it as $150 in F and $350 in VF. I can't find anything for comparison, but I don't think it would grade any higher than that. I do think, however, the these are low estimates. Do you know what the marks on the reverse are? Was the coin mounted? Also, can you get a weight on the coin? Oh, and by the way

Something to add...these 2 Rupien should be silver. Does this coin have a gold color? I went over to Heritage auctions and saw the coin sold for a bit more than Krause values. Also, comparing the reverse of your coin to examples on Heritage, I noticed a few things (arrows) The lettering appears larger and closer to the borders of the outer circle...look at the height of OSTAFRIKANISCHE, and that dash. There's also an odd mark in the S of GESELLSCHAFT. I don't know what these differences signify, but maybe someone who knows can comment further?

Though I am not a German East Africa expert (I have 2 Pesa and 3 Heller, since 64 Pesa = 1 Rupie and 100 Heller = 1 Rupie, I guess I have about 1/45 of a 2 Rupie coin), I would guess the arrows noted are nothing but hits, digs,or knocks. Just normal wear and banging from circulation. But I am not an expert, just 1/45th or so of an expert.

thank you all so far. the coin weighs 22.53 grams diameter is 34,5 mm approx there are NO traces of having been mounted and it appears that the black marks are some kind of permanent marker traces. I tried to remove them with acetone and it worked a bit. I think if I soak it for a week these marks would come off. the S problem? could it be a die problem? that funny thing is there, for sure. it looks like most German old 5 mark pieces, pre 1900, not gold color. thanks so far, maybe we will find out what this Oldie is all about. oh, forgot an important factor: the coin is NOT magnetic and appears to be silver.

22.53 grams is near right, the Krause catalogue lists it as 23.32 grams. The descrepancy is probably just from wear, it certainly looks genuine enough. Nice find to get from a coin lot!

I keep comparing your coin to the dozen or so on Heritage, and I'm still scratching my head. It might appear slight, but for the lettering to be that larger has to be a die difference, and not due to wear. Check out the difference in rim width. Either it's a cool die variety--or the other option. If I spot one with the "S" mark like yours I'll be sure to update my comments.

DVD Collector, interesting.... a person I know from Europe thinks it could be a oriental forgery. Apparently there were similar coins making the rounds 3-4 years ago... would be a sad thing, but it might be possible. Maybe I should send it to NGC or PCGS?
thank you guys.. CS

Well...I'm not an expert on these, but I buy a lot of world coins and scrutinize details closely. Something was a bit off to my eyes, and portrait detail was a bit low, so interesting that another thinks so.

The lettering does not look to be in a even circle, most notably the top part of East Africa.. the Heritage coin looks better. Letter detail on the OP's coin looks bold and rounded; Heritage looks thinner and straight.
Any Chinese fakes of this coin out there?

There are a few chinese fakes of these around... I have both a 1893 and a 1894 'replica' of this type (couldnt resist - I'm not JUST into Third Reich stuff, but also Kaiserreich, Danzig and DOA); what I hate to have to point out is that BOTH the 1893 and 1894 'replica's' have the same 'issue' with the 'S' in GESELLSCHAFT AND they both also have the 'dodgy dash' in 'DEUTSCH- OTS...'... Also have a look at the Tail on the Lion, and tell me that isn't 'suspicious'... Sorry, hate to be the guy that tells you this, but I'm 99% sure what you've got is a chinese knock-off, much like this one on ebay --> http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...350259487832

Well OK then...that's much better than my guestimates. Again, I'm sorry too the coin isn't genuine, but I hope this thread helps other collectors.

Ja, the big deal is probably the Lion's tail tho - the 'S' issue could have been caused by damage to the die (although having replica's from DIFFERENT years rules that out) and the dodgy-dash could be explained by a minor re-punching of the die... The Lion's tail however, is the clincher - about half way up the tail, the replica has a section that is MUCH straighter (almost vertical) than the original...
In a way, this is definitely something that interests me (and thus why I have been picking up the odd 'replica' here and there) - tracking down replica's and finding the differences between these and the real thing; this one isn't that difficult... I'm keen to have a look a Weimar 1933J 5RM replica that I have just bought too.
