I've heard many references to large and small date coins esp on pennies. What does this all mean and how does that help to determine the value of such coins

There is a marginal difference in the dates. They are on the 1982's also. I can never spot them, but my Mother apparently had a keen eye for them as she has them sorted and named.

If you have the Red Book they have some pretty good pictures. I have found both Lg and Sm dates of the 1960 and the 1982 cents going by the pics in this book. 1982's are real easy to tell apart aside from the size the 2 looks diffrent. It's a little harder to tell apart the 1960's, for me anyway.

only thing that looks different on these things to me is maybe the "0" is a little bit smaller on the small date, you can tell by the smaller circle, but the whole thing may be smaller but looking at both side by side like they are in this pack thats the best way to see the difference

For me I look at the curl of the 6 in the date for 1960. It seems the curl is tighter for the large date and more open on the small date. As a point of reference for me if you continue the line of the 6 straight out on the small date it would clear the 9. On the large date it would hit the 9.

Thanks for all the pics and input Everybody!! Everyone here is so great and giving with their knowledge, inputs, advice and everything else!! I've tried other forums and they seem stingy, and secretive about sharing info and their inputs that replies to their posts are selective and few. I am so Lucky to have found You All!! Thank you.

If anyone has anything to add to this post regarding small/large date or anything else be my guest!

I have a CDN news letter that is a couple months old but good enough for me. It shows the roll price for these to all be fairly close at 65-90 cents per roll bid with the exception of the Phily small date which has a bid of $155 and ask of $170. For mint state single coin prices I would go to an auction site and look it up.
