how is it possible/profitable for reputable companies to slab coins (PCGS, NCG, etc, not bottom tier slabbers) that are fairly recent and not worth much more than $5-10? I have no idea how much slabbing can cost but it seems like for somebody to slab a coin from PCGS (for example) and sell it for $5-10 is not going to keep you in business for long. Is it because somebody does such a high volume? I have seen some on ebay and in coin shops and was curious how somebody can do that with numerous coins.

Bulk submissions of same type/date coins, single level of service, one box out, one box back. That's the only way they can come close to breaking even. Many who do this count on a few true "gems" to make up the difference.

Kind of what I figured. My dad just got some coins from LC coins (online direct and some ebay) and one was graded by PCGS and it cost him $6 or so. It was a proof DCAM MS69 State Quarter from 2001 or 2002. Not really concerned about how much it is actually "worth" I just thought it would be next to impossible to get a coin graded and slabbed and sell it for that price point.

I agree with SeatedNut. The registry set crowd will pay big bucks for a top-pop coin. The coins you see going for $10 are likely the ones that people thought would grade higher than they actually did.

Makes sense, although MS69 is a pretty top notch grade. Seems like $6 for a MS69 wouldn't even cover the slabbing costs. But like was mentioned before volume makes up the difference I guess. It makes for a nice way to get some recent coins at pretty high grade at a cheap price.
