What is this for? If it is just to put into your coin album or whatever, I have 2 thoughts:

1) Set them aside until you get access to a scale.

2) Try to see if you can separate them yourself. You could practice by taking a few pennies that are post 1982, and a few that are pre-1982. Without looking at the date, try to separate them just by how heavy they feel. Then you can look at the dates and see how well you did. With a little practice you might be fairly good.

Good luck.

You would need to either buy a gram scale or you could rig up a device. Let me see if I can find some information for you on that and get back with you here in a sec.

I don't use a scale to separate them. If you flip the copper coins, they'll have a nice little ring to them. The Zinc ones are flat and don't have the same ring. Flip a few pre/post 82 ones to get an idea for the sound, it's pretty easy to tell them apart.

Of course if you're talking about BU state coins, you may not want to take the chance of fingering them up, but if you're pulling them from rolls, I'd say you'd be safe doing this test.

Popsicle stick method:

(1) Popsicle stick
(1) old AA battery (as a fulcrum)
(1) old Memorial cent you don't need from the 70's

Mark a center line horizontally and vertically on the popsicle stick and with a small dab of hot glue stick that stick down to the center of the battery. With a very small dab of hot glue, stick the cent's diameter tangent to the end of the arc on the popsicle stick. Now when you weigh the cents on the other end the coppers will come close to balancing and the zincolns won't come off the table (or wherever you place it) very much at all. Just an idea that has gone around here for awhile except maybe the glue part but I wouldn't want everything flopping around everywhere. Remember though, small amount of hot glue, you won't need a bunch. Hope this helps.
