I've never sold a coin before. I have a lot of wheat pennies, maybe 400 (guessing). I found a coin shop who will pay me 3 cents each for them. Is that a good price? Most of them are from the 40s and 50s, some 30s, some 20s, and a few teens. I was thinking of taking out the nicest one of each date I have and selling them so I can use the extra money to try and find more coins. I hope that makes sense. Any suggestions from collectors who have done this before?

3 cents is pretty typical from what I've seen in coin shops and heard here on the forum. A couple of shops by me will only pay 2 cents.

I assume you have searched through for the dates and mints? have you gone through for varieties and errors? If not then I would imagine no issue at all in honestly presenting them to another collector as a group to go through.
If not in a pinch, then maybe just keep them for a friend that starts collecting?. Never forget what is your extra surplus is a hole in a book to someone else.
The Buy/Sell/Trade section on this site is a wonderful way of sharing too. You will be at the required 50 posts in no time.
But to my original thoughts-
A collector will pay you more than a dealer would, but you would still be selling at lower than a dealer.....both side are happy. I would think .04-.05 is within reason if it is a nice mix with honest content among collectors. All about content and expectations.
Good luck.

RFB, actually I haven't gone through them for any reason except to see how old they are. The only key date I know of was the 1909S VDB (?), I think, which I'm sure wouldn't surprise you that I don't have. You mentioned varieties and errors. I didn't know there were any for these coins. I'm really, really new at this. I think I'd better hang on to these for a little longer until I know what I'm doing. Can you, or anyone else, recommend a web site or book that will tell me what varieties and errors to look for in wheat pennies? Thanks for the responses everyone. And, unknown95, thanks for the offer, but I think I'm going to hang on to these coins for awhile until I know more about them.

Quote: so would you like to sell them? Any forum member needs to have 50 quality posts before they attempt to Buy/Sell/Trade here on the forum. If you were not aware of this check out the forum rules section. Not trying to get on you just letting you know what the deal is. It is set up for the protection of the forum members.

Unknown95, There are probably quite a few members who would sell you wheat cents at a better price than you are paying. I myself have a bunch that I've been collecting since 1972. However, we are not permitted to make deals with New Forum Members until they have at least 50 posts. Also this is really not the place. Once you have your 50 posts you could post in the want to buy section of the forum and I'm sure you would get numerous replies.
