Hey, I've just started in coin collecting and am lucky to have a couple avid coin collectors as mates, but I have come into a bit of a pickle. The 2x2 holders, with the crown on the little tab. One of my mates said he was told that the reverse should be shown on the side with the crown, and the other mate says the obverse should be shown on the side with the crown. Is there a set criteria to storing coins in these holders or is it just up to the collector? Here is the coin holder type I'm talking about. After much discussion on the subject we drew no clear answer other than the assumption that maybe because the year used to be on the reverse and now it is on the obverse that it was the year that needed to be at the front. Another thing. One of them uses staples on the self adhesive pockets, but the other says it is NOT to be done. What's the go there? Thanks for any help. Cheers, spd. It's your coins and your holders, Do what you like.
I use staples for a number of reasons. First they are a lot cheaper. Second, It's easier to put the coin in them without worry of getting on the sticky parts. Third, they dont pull apart if you have extreme heat in your area. The staples do require more work in putting in the staples instead of press and seal. The staples can also be flattened with plyers so the fit better in a box.
I have never worried about which side the tap or crown is on. I normally put the information on the side of the coin that holds the most interest for me. Sometimes the Obverse and sometimes Reverse. I don't think it really matters. Rejoice in your freedom!

Glad to hear, as I have coins done both ways. Also on another note, I found my second 2005 MOR $1 today!

This is the way I do it.

I have never thought about it but I think Toast has hit the nail on the head.

The only thing that concerns me is that the coin should be 'upright'. I hate it when you get a coin already in a 2x2 and its at an angle.
Having the coin upright will also mean that the angle of any upsets is readily visible.

I always put tab with crown up. But then was delivered coins with tab down (from Greg McD himself)? Some of those darned self adhesive 2x2's don't even sealproperly and I have to staple them as well. Does anyone else have this problem?

I use both the staple type and the adhesive type. It depends on the coin I am storing.
I always store "crown up" and on top but like toast it depends on what I want to look at first which determines what is on the front side.

Lighthouse self adhesives then straight into the album so they cant unstick - not that these ones look likely to unstick. GREAT HOLDERS ! much better than some other adhesive I tried.
The holder also comes with a strip of plastic over the glue and a tab to pull it off. Place the coin with no fear, then gently peel tab, coin won't move. Squeeze it shut slowly and never had a problem yet..
As for which way up.. who cares ? ;D but I was putting the obverse up.
