Hi..

I am new in collecting all these coins, stamps or pnc.

I need your guidance, tips, or link to a website on how to choose a good one to collect.

How do you know, I should buy this or that?

Is it based on the number of mintage or situation or ?

because I don't want to buy all of them since I have limited budget and I am confuse on what to buy and when I want to buy probably already sold out.

Therefore, how do I know this new one will be sold out.

Please spare your tips and thank you for your help.

Surat, welcome to the forum.

I will attempt to answer your questions, but as you will see, The answers will not be complete.

I am new in collecting all these coins, stamps or pnc.

Are you collecting or wanting to collect coins? stamps?, PNCs? or all three

I need your guidance, tips, or link to a website on how to choose a good one to collect.

First before you collect any coin or PNC you should read as much as you can- First rule in coin collecting - buy the book then the coin.
If you cn't afford the books- check out websites such as mine ( informational only) and the links.

I gave up stamp collecting after may years because I found coin/PNC collecting more rewarding and challenging- mentally, emotionaly and financially.

How do you know, I should buy this or that? Is it based on the number of mintage or situation or ?
You don't this is a personal choice.
some collectors buy for investment, some for the beauty, some for fun, some for history. Each collector has to decide what they want to collect.
As you are in Oz are you interested in Australian coins? or Foreign coins.
In Australia if you are going to collect Aussie coins are you interested Pre decimal or decimal?
Are you interested in bullion (gold/silver etc) hard on a small budget , or NCLT.some collect errors.
Another reason why I am having troubl;e answering your question there are so many choices.

because I don't want to buy all of them since I have limited budget and I am confuse on what to buy and when I want to buy probably already sold out. Therefore, how do I know this new one will be sold out.
Coins may be purchased on ebay or other internet auctions. Coins may be purchased from coin dealers- some of the forum members are dealers.
Coins may be purchased directly from the mints. Coins may also be purchased from other forum members. PNCs may be purchased from Australia Post- and both the mints and Australia post have subscription services

Answering this question is the question of all questions for collectors- I haope I have given you some insight.

My recommendation is If you want to start off on a small budget and you want to develop your collection with variety.

Start with the Australian 50 cent pieces.
some other interesting coices are the $1 Silver Kangaroos or the Kookaburras. Each person will give you a different answer-
You will have to make your own decision.

The current PNCs can be purchased at a reasonable price but some of the older ones are an investment.

I hope this information was helpful and did not mix you up further

In coin collecting each person collects for a different reason and every reason is right for that collector-
No two collections will be or should be the same.

An important key is enjoy yourself- buy what you want and LIKE

also as another tip - remember rule one- read the book
Rule 2 is NEVER clean a coin.

Please post any further questions
We hope you enjoy your stay on our forum, we are now approaching 100 Aussie members.

Thanks for your reply Richard.

At the moment, I am purchasing all, coins, stamps and pnc but mostly coins decimal (not pre-decimal or bullion), silver or gold coin (not sure whether or not these part of bullion) and pnc and no longer purchasing stamps except first day cover.

Now, I am concentrating more with proof set and pnc or any $1 or 50c mainly silver coin, if I LIKE the coins :)

I just need to know how do you people know this proof set or coins will be triple in the next 3-4 yrs, for example past, present and future year 1999-2001.
I wanted to buy last time but I didn't buy it and now I regret because the value up a lot.

I mostly buy Australian but I also purchased other country for some occasion but not many only a few.

Yes, I understand your answer, my questions were too big and I need to narrow down.

Since you ask me to read the book first, any book recommendation that I should read?

In summary, I prefer decimal coin and pnc.
Decimal coin: silver coin either $1 Silver Kangaroos or the Kookaburras (but not buying it for every year) or other releases.

Apologise if it is still too broad.

Yeah, I agree with you enjoy and buy what you like.

I just still confuse who decide this coin/pnc value up a lot in the next few years except rare occasion for example I read from this forum, 2006 proof set got $1 2005 year. I have this proof set but not with $1 2005 coin.

Anyway, thanks for your input.

Maybe it is our benefit who buy these stuff and the value up a lot in the near future until then just enjoy all of these :)

And Yess...I enjoy this forum so thank you for all who contribute.

My advice to you is to decide why you want to collect. Ie for investment or pleasure. This will largely determine what type of coins you will collect. Next you need to decide budget. This again wll narrow things down.

If collection for pleasure pick a theme or type of coin as this will give your collection focus and increase enjoyment.

If collecting for investment...read, get advice and then read some more. Set a budget and buy the best quality you can afford.

Hope this helps.

Yes I agree to all of you.

So far, I only buy and keep it.
Probably I will sell in the future or maybe not or probably I will give to my son or grandson and they are the one who sell it in the future who knows :)

Probably this is a stupid question, please correct me if I am wrong.

Collector is the one who buy and keep it for long term, maybe over 10 yrs or not selling at all.
Investor is the one who buy and sell it again or short term say within 5 yrs.

But I don't like to buy the color coin such as fire engine, classic car but I would like to buy if they release silver/gold Star Wars edition :)

So I guess, I am more to collector, collector if I like the theme and keep it for long term.
not as investment because I am not selling it so far.
Or....I confuse myself....

Anyway, just enjoy and don't worry about the rest, probably the best :)

Thanks everyone and I love this forum so I will monitor all the upcoming new coin or pnc from all your input.

A collector collects for the fun of collecting. The primary reason a investor collects is to make money. The may keep a coin 10 miniutes or 100 years but they do it with the purpose of making money.

Okay....I am a collector then...

Another question:

Is it true, Royal collection coin more popular than other coin type releases hence royal coin will be up in value easily?

Hi Surat, welcome to the forum.
I wrote a long reply a couple of days ago but wasn't logged in and it ate my post so I got cranky[:p].
So, I'll try again tonight. The best piece of advice I ever got for new issues was to buy proof coins with low mintages and steer clear of Tuvalu and obscure countries that have no relevance really to the coin theme (does anyone else get that?). My latest piece of advice for pre decimal was to buy proof 1955-1963.
These are the rules I like to stick to but it really is personal preference and attractiveness of the coin.
There is also a wealth of knowledge within this forum and the aussiecoins.net forum that you can search through for hours. And don't be afraid to ask questions.
Good luck
