Hello,

I was hoping I could get an opinion on this coin. It's a 1963 D Franklin half.

Would this be considered a double die? The D mint mark and some of the letters in United States Of America are also like this. This was the only picture that I could get that came out well enough to see it.

Is this coin worth anything?

Thank you,

Debra

First off, to CCF. I am no pro but it looks like Machine Doubling to me. I think it's very common on Franklin halves and there would not be a premium for it, sorry . But keep looking

Welcome Frogsong to the forum. He's right It's Machine Doubling damage (MDD) not a doubLED die (DD).

I recently purchased a 1963 mint set. The Franklin-d has slight doubling over the g in "In God We Trust", The E in "Liberty" is doubled. I have encountered another issue with the Franklin-P. On the obverse 1963 is doubled and many of the letters in the phrase " In God We Trust" is doubled and "Liberty" is doubled too. I have not seen anything on the net or any type of book that has any info on the 1963-p,d, doubling. I just wanted to let you know that I have much of the same thing. If anyone can help me with a book title or literature, I would be grateful.

I think I have to agree with the above responses: that does look like MDD (Machine Damage Doubling). I do some roll searching with halves and have seen similar occurrences of MDD in the same location so I think it may just have to do with the size of the coin.

And to answer you question about value.... $6-7 depending on where silver is and what they are buying at. They usually trade for spot silver in that condition even with a minor error

Hello and Welcome.
Once you get used to finding your way around the site
(I'm still having problems myself :)
you can search for some posts/links that will explain and show
the differences between actual die/hub doubling and machine made
doubling on different coins. Like mentioned earlier the correct term
is "Doubled Die" DD for short. DDO for the obverse and DDR for the reverse of the coin. And again as far as this coin, is does carry a premium because of it's silver content. If it was in much better condition maybe even more of a premium. I wish now I had put away my
weekly allowance and lunch money when I was a kid. Plenty of 1961,62,63 etc. coins around then :)
