As cmdrstp found out in this thread, it is possible to have a magnet that's too powerful, as far as using it as a fake detection device is concerned.
For this purpose, all you really need is a simple, cheap fridge magnet. It only has to be strong enough to stick to something steel, preferably powerful enough to stick to steel even through the thickness of a slab.
