1831 CBH

I don't know about the Overton number, but I'll take a stab at the grade. It looks like a weakly struck coin particularly around the outer edges. The reverse looks better than the obverse, but I would grade it around VF30 overall. I am hardly an expert though.

They're tough to attribute when worn, aren't they?

I think it's O-119. Many 1931's have minute serifs on the 1's - this narrows it down. The kicker for me is the relationship between the A and M in AMERICA; they're very close and the base of the M appears below the A. That's characteristic of O-119.

I've noticed when the obverse dies get worn out on the Capped Bust Halfs the stars tend to widen the point which points towards the edge and the stars then bleed into the dentils. This is almost always on the "a" sub-varieties (later die usages).

I've seen that a lot on many of the years of this cool coin.

This does appear to be an O-119. Nice rarity for this die marriage too!

I'd say VF25 for a grade.

The obverse struck using Obverse Die 11. This was the second and last use of the die. It was first used to strike the O-118.

This was the only use of Reverse Die N.

(1) The date has tall 1's with full serifs.

(2) Die lines in the shape of a fingerprint are usually - not always - visible below star 1.

(3) AM nearly touch and the base of the M is lower than the base of the A.
