Getting Coins At Deep Discounts

Welllll....it wasn't pretty, but I got a 1948D dime in change yesterday.

10 years ago, ebay was an awesome place for deep discounts as people sold things they didn't know. Those days are mostly over though.

i definatley would have paid $89 for the 1827 half, I got a whole lot of ebay of old coins and there was a 1903s Barber quarter in AU condition with minor rim dents for around $20

Honestly, the best deals I've gotten are either from antique stores or the auctions at my local club meetings.

I have found that good deals can be found at farm auctions. It seems if the bill says they have some coins most pepal show up for the equipment and realestate.

I have made some decent scores on ebay. These were primarily Morgan dollar VAMs that were unattributed. Here's a partial list:

- 1878 8TF VAM 9 (first Morgan) - total of three. One went to PCGS and came back XF40, one is AU50 raw and the last probably VF Raw. The XF40 sold for $700 and I still have the other two. I paid about $150 for all three. Book value for the other two is around $1200.
- 1878 7/8TF VAM 32 in XF raw, paid $35 and book is $300
- 1878 7TF VAM 116A in AU raw, paid $30 and BV is $375
- 1878 7TF VAM 118 in XF raw, paid around $20 and BV is $300
- 1878 7TF VAM 167 in XF raw, paid $25 BV $325
- 1878 7TF VAM 187 in XF raw, paid $20 BV $125
- 1878 7TF VAM 203A in XF raw, paid $30 BV $270
- 1878 7TF VAM 224 in MS63 raw, paid $75 BV $400
- 1878 7TF VAM 228B in XF raw, paid $35 BV $250
- 1878-S VAM 17A in MS62 raw, paid $40 BV $150
- 1878-S VAM 19A in MS63 raw, paid $50 BV $180
- 1878-S VAM 36A in PCGS64, paid $75 BV $370
- 1878-S VAM 36B in MS61 raw, paid $45 BV $300
- 1878-S VAM 50 in XF raw, paid $22 BV $225
- 1878-S Long Nocks (VAMs 26, 27(x2), 56, 58, and 59) paid a combined $250 for these and estimate value is around $2300
- 1880 VAM 6 (one AU, two XF) paid $100 BV $600
- 1880 VAM 39A PCGS AU53, paid $50 BV $1200
- 1880-O VAM 49, one MS62 raw, two AU raw, paid $175 for all BV $5000
- 1891-O VAM 3A2, two raw VF, paid $50 BV $1000
- 1900-O VAM 29A, two raw VF paid $45 BV $500

As you all know, Book Value and realized price can be miles apart. I have been waiting to submit these to PCGS until they started attributing the HitList 40 VAMs. If they grade near my estimate, I will be immensely happy.

I also hit a coin auction last year and picked up some nice pieces relatively cheap:
- 1980-D LMC struck on clad dime planchet PCGS MS63, paid $8 BV around $300
- Also picked up a couple of nice varities 1838-O dime with rpm and die crack and a 1913 T2 Buffalo with rim Cud. All less than $15.
