Just reveived my uncirculated sets from the US Mint. All the Denver coins have the "D" mint mark and all the Philadelphia coins have the "P" mint mark except the Lincoln pennys which don't have any mint mark. I know that no mint mark usually means Philadelphia, but why mark all the other coins and not the pennys. Can anyone tell me why? Just wondering
The Philly mint never did start putting a mint mark on the cents, even after they put them on all the other coins, sometime in the 80's if memory serves me right.
I believe one reason was that the West Point and San Francisco mints have (in the past) picked up the slack for Philadelphia on the cents. The mint mark is left off because the much lower mintage "W" and "S" cents would be hoarded.
