For a type set collection, what do you think is a better investment? High grade common date or low grade key date?

For example I have a 1919D WL half dollar about VF20 that is not encapsulated. Would you sell it to acquire something like a 1946 MS66 WL?

Low grade key dates will almost always rise in value faster that common date coins but low grade coins tend to make for a lousy type set when you are specifically trying to show off the designs for type coins through the years.

for investment only I would say the low grade key dates since they will always be in demand. if you want your type set to look the best and are not worried about investment then I would go with the common coins

IMO ...
Low grade (circ grade) key date would be my choice. I don't look at VF as a low grade.
For me .. I could not afford to spend what it would take to make every coin in the type set high grade coins. A good VF-XF set is a nice looking set too .. Again .. just my opinion.

Thank you for the replies. I am definitely keeping my key dates coins. But some are definitely low grade like the 1913 Buffalo nickel with the date worn-off the mound.

I guess part of the question is when building a type set, where do you place your limited resources? Key dates get very pricey. We are in this for the thrill of finding that special coin, but this is also an investment that should bring a return.

I think Goldrush has an excellent idea. Build an attractive VF-XF type set and include the key dates when possible.

Well, i'd go high grade common for a type set to show off the designs, but it is not the choice for investment. Only reason is that any key date I own will be with my set to make it complete. I dont want to buy 2 key dates of the same year/mm. Just my opinion as I havent even started my type sets yet.....working on completing my lincolns
