Just got this delightful 1980 Papua New Guinea coin and would like to share. Seven sided large coin at 30mm diameter, made of white metal? Showing a peacock on top of a log in front and a real cool calm crocodile at the back sorrounded by aztec like artwork, feels heavy on the hand for it's size

Made of cupronickel. The 50t denomination was only struck as commemoratives; given the amount of wear I've seen on some of them in scratchtrays and bargain-bins around here, they saw considerable circulation.

That's the Papua New Guinea national emblem - effectively their "coat of arms". The "peacock" is actually a bird of paradise, a class of birds found in New Guinea and surrounding islands. A bird of paradise can also be seen on the PNG flag.

The "log" is a kundu drum, a traditional musical instrument of the island. A fishing spear completes the emblem.
