something is up I think with the bow tie area, one has a marking of some sort below the bow tie where the other doesn't. I have an arrow pointing to the area in question, what do you think?

Actually the second picture is the norm and 1st has been polished down or worn.

First pix is an over abraded die and the second pix is a die chip, IMHO.

And the real story is:

One coin is a large date, the other is a small date. Aside from the abraded die on the one that has the smaller bow tie tip, the design was changed slightly in that area between the two date sizes, making up for the rest of the difference in their appearance.

The one with the less obvious bow tie tip and all the die wear is a large date. The other is a small date.

I've noticed Charles doesn't post much lately, but jumps right in if he feels an answer is not providing the right information. Thanks for that update Charles, always learning.

never really noticed but looking at the dates it shows somewhat the same thing to look for in the 9 as does the small/large date 1970s, or am I seeing things? is either one harder to find?

1974 cents exist in both date sizes for all the coins except the proof - they are all large date. None of any of the six different business strike possibilities are difficult to find, which is one reason why most people don't know they exist because none of the books publish the information.

The most obvious differences between the two are the sharp, pointed square-end of the inner loop of the 9 on the small date compared to the rounded inside of the 9 on the large date, as well as the same with the tip of the 7...small date is sharp, large date is very blunt. Additionally, the motto (IN GOD WE TRUST) nearly touches the rim on the large date, while there is some clear space between the two on the small date.

MorgansRMine - You are correct - I don't post much here, or anywhere else for that matter. I have become very busy tring to eek out a living, and just don't have time for the boards much. Things will turn around for me at the end of the year, but until then, it's constant work for me.
