That is an awesome price!

A few things I know from collecting this set though...the 16d is the one that's going to bring most of that price tag and it's often counterfeited. Without certification, or AT LEAST clear pics of it so you can make a solid judgment call, I'd be very wary. You might be spending WAAAAY more than a set of Mercury dimes are worth, minus the 16d, if it's not real.

Also, eBayers love to either bid at the last minute or snipe. I wouldn't be surprised to see this one jump quite a bit right near the end if others are watching it and hoping that the 16d is real.

If you decide to bid, good luck! I've wanted one since I was a kid and first started with this set...the only one I still need is the 16d! Getting them all at once, and for a great price, would be quite the score!

Ah...I went back to the auction right after I posted and saw the other images, including the 16d ob/rev pics. I don't know how to tell real from fake, but if you do and can tell it's genuine, good luck on the bid. It's at a fantastic price right now for a complete set! I'd love to have the money myself to bid!

tumbleweedtrumpet: There's a mark there, but it's difficult to tell with the pic quality what exactly is going on with it. Is it a D? Is it real? Hmmm...

I'm definitely no expert, and haven't the funds to take a chance on this one...someone is either going to have a fun time when they receive it or be quite unhappy.

o well it sold for 675 with 13 dollar shipping and 1 bid I'm pretty positive a set like this should have gotten many more bids considering its price but you never know...

No not confused. There is a mark, but I cannot tell if it is a D. Also be aware that many of the counterfeits are made in AG-3 to disguise the tooling.

yeah, I would definitely have been hesitant on that. I would have asked for better pics...if refused or ignored, definitely no bid on a coin this important to my set.

That's a weird auction, if you ask me. If legit, why not show a better pic of the 1916-D to maximize bids?
I've seen a few other auctions of coin lots with one poorly-photographed "key coin"--hmmm.

Even if genuine, it wouldn't grade higher than FR-2, which would put in the $400-$500 range. The rest of the set is worth around $200, so it's not a spectacular deal imo. Given all the coins are genuine(which is questionable), the seller is asking about market value for the set.

I have a FR-2 1916D Merc and it looks identical to the one listed in the ebay ad. If I recall, it was around $450 when I bought it. Adding a couple hundred to the price makes this collection around a market value deal.
