I don't know, maybe they're grading it F-15 or VF-20, but even at that grade, it can't be worth $3000! It's cleaned and pretty obviously corroded too, jeesh some buyers are crazy. I've had times when I bid 'high' on a coin I thought was worth $800 because I liked it ($750) and end up getting outbid by $500, but this seriously takes the cake. And no, I did not bid.

Just friggin' crazy, heh.

Oh btw, here it is:

Is it wrong to point and laugh?
Maybe those 3 bidders thought--"I'll win this, no matter what!"

Yeah...that makes more sense, seeing how that was obviously scrubbed to bare metal.

The bidders may have just gone nuts because it is a fairly rare coin but they are out there if you look hard enough, Heritage auctioned 14 of them since 2008 with hammered prices between $402.50(a thoroughly abused G-6) and $37,375(an original AU-55). Below VF problem coins typically auctioned for less than $2000.

$5K? That's a MS64 price--is that $2.5 really MS?

It's probably MS and it has a strong strike, but I would not ever pay MS-64 money for it. Maybe AU-58 in hopes of getting an MS-62 or a little better.

You can't fault the seller, though - that was a very well-written auction.
