Ziploc has just introduced a reusable zip top bag that comes with a hand vacuum pump. The bags have a valve on the outside that you place the pump over and draw a vacuum in the bag. Since they are reusable, after you remove coins you can put what is left back in the bag and re-draw the vacuum. Since this is a new product, I don't know how well or how long the vacuum will hold but it only takes 30 seconds to re-do the vacuum. A good cheap solutuion to airtite storage looks like to me.

Neat. I'll have to keep my eye out for those. Thanks for the tip.

That has been around for awhile now. I am wondering if the type of plastic is safe for unprotected coins to come into contact with? Here is another idea;seal-a-meal vacuum system, cost more and I don't know the safety factor in regards to the type of plastic they use for there bags either but you can make any size bag you want when you use there roll of plastic. It also comes with pre-cut bags.Just a thought.

Just for clarification,I would store coins in tubes then the tubes in the vacuum bag. I have a seal a meal also but the bags are expensive and need to be cut open. They can be reused, but each time you open them and reseal them the bag gets smaller. A seal-a-meal will cost you about $150.00, the ziplocs about $5.00. As I said, a CHEAP solution to airtite storage.

This shouldn't be the primary storage container. I would only use these with airtites, 2x2's, tubes, etc. Better yet, I would not use them at all. IMO, these are great for food, but not good for coins. Why? Putting a vacuum on the bag is just encouraging it to take on air and it certainly will. Over time, the seal will be lost and the bag will "inhale" air.

With a regular bag under normal, equalized pressure, gases will not be "drawn" into the bag. Air may slowly diffuse into the bag, but the effect will be must less than a bag under vacuum constantly trying to suck air in.

Bad thad, do you think that gases generated from the bag itself would be harmful? I store my BEST stuff in airtites in plastic boxes with dessicants so this system I plan to use for my "secondary quality" coins. Again, I would only use the ziplocs with the coins in tubes or 2x2's.

No, I don't think there'd be any harmful gases emitted by the bags themselves.
