I came across a 1918 George V gold coin with what looks like an E by the neck. In the bottom half circle of the E shape it has an A and under that there is 21. Does anyone know what it means? Every picture I see on the internet does not have this engraved on it.

Sounds like it might be a jeweller's mark, in which case the coin may be a 21 karat gold replica of a sovereign, rather than a genuine sovereign.

I'd like to point out ( I don't know if it has any significance) that London mint stopped issuing sovereigns after 1917 (till 1925), and in 1918 they were minted only at three Australian mints, Canada, and newly opened Bombay mint. Did somebody decide to make his own?
