I pulled this lustrous 1 gulden from a junk box a long time ago. It has the appearance of a BU, but the surfaces look kind of granular. What would you make of this? Does anyone know if this is typical for coins from the Netherlands from this time period? Thanks!

Appearance looks normal to me, I'd grade it at AU-58.

I have a '72 and '73 Gulden in my collection, yours looks no different. Depending on the luster (I can't see it in the scan) I'd grade between AU and UNC.

snowman- Would it be possible for you to post a pic of one of yours so that I can compare?

It may look normal, however, these coins found in lots and bins are usually pretty well beat up. None of the ones I have look half as good as this.

DL20K- Yeah, it does seem that a lot of modern Dutch coins are not that appreciated. My coin actually has a lot of nice luster. It looks unc though kind of scratched up.

Were these coins struck in rather low relief? This might account for the rather light detail on some of the hair of the queen as well as the seemingly granular surface (which would be the result of a weak strike on steel).

Archraz - It's not that I forgot to post these pics, its just that I haven't had much free time. If the scans don't work for you, I can certainly take pics. I also threw in a '57 silver Gulden that is low MS for comparison.

snowman- Nice! Thanks for posting these. I must admit that I hadn't seen a silver 1957 Gulden before. So do you think that the clad 1972 & 1973 are both low unc as well?

The '72 has significant contact marks around the nose so I'd call it VF. The '73 has enough contact marks that I would call it XF.
