I'm trying to evaluate some of the coins I have prior to posting them. By my research, I've found out that the RedBook is a dream value, Numismedia is a lower dream value, the greysheet seems to be what everyone wants to pay.
If that's the case, what good are the other two guides?

did that make any sense?

They're good for rip-off dealers.

Numismedia is a fair estimate of retail value on most coins but it is still wonky on some. CDN Greysheet prices are what most collectors want to pay but that is not always reality, it is more of a wholesale price guide for dealers. RedBook is generally at the high end of retail price but it can be fairly close on some things.

As an example, look at Lincoln cents. I typically use the Greysheet to price Lincolns that I have for sale, usually charging ASK but sometimes a bit lower. A 1913-S Lincoln at EF40 CDN ask is $51(bid $46), Numismatic News Money Market supplement lists it at $57, and the 2009 edition RedBook is at $45. Numismedia is at $36.80 for the very same EF40 grade Look through the early Lincoln series and you will find others like this as well. No single price guide gets it all right, hence the name guide.

When I am figuring out a price I want to pay for something, I look at a number of price guides and come up with a price range depending on the eye appeal of the coin.
