my wife and I just picked up this 1878 Morgan Carson City mint. I have a camera that takes what is called "super high-resolution" pictures and when I blow them up it shows so much detail that I am now worried about the authenticity of this coin.  Could I get some feedback on it please? unfortunately, I just tried to upload the picture and because of my dial up service it times out. Therefore, if someone could give me some things to look for in the quality and mint marks to look for I would appreciate it. We are to get DSL service on December 3, when that happens I will post photos immediately! Thank you!#9830;

hemisboats, Without pictures there is no way we can offer opinions on your coin. There are some options available to you. Do a "Google Image" search for 1878-CC Morgan dollar and look at pictures of coins housed in PCGS or NGC holders. Compare these to yours and make note of the key areas (date and mintmark). When looking at the date pay attention to orientation in relation to Liberty's neck and hair, size, and the serifs on the numbers. The mintmark should also match using these same criteria. Counterfeiters have had problems in these two areas on Morgan dollars. If you have the ability to resize you pictures (I have MS Office and use Picture Manager) and can get them 99kb or smaller, you can post them here. If you want to learn how to post pics here, there are tutorials ... just go to the top of the main page and use the search function. Type in "Posting Pictures". Good luck.

I don't see any problems with the 1878-CC posted there. Here are pictures of one from "Coinfacts".

You could email them to me if you wish, as well, and I can get them posted here. The email address is my username at coincommunity.com. Just be aware, I work second shift and if you email them today I won't get them up until I get home tonight.
In the meantime, I'm going to move this thread into a more appropriate forum where you'll get more attention from the specialists.

 SuperDave would probably get to it sooner than I could. The email would go to my home account and I wouldn't get to it until later tonight, if at all (my son, daughter-in-law, and grandson arrived for the Holidays and are waiting for me to get home from work).

The pics appear below. It's counterfeit. The reverse design of this coin is one which was not used on 1878-CC Morgans. It is what's known as the "C" reverse; all 1878 Carson City coins used a variation of the "B" reverse. The third pic is of a "B" reverse coin - the easiest way to tell the difference is by the shape of the arrow feathers.

Wow! Thanks SuperDave but I feel bad for the OP. At least Miss Liberty's skin is breathing well. I've never seen pores of that size.

thank you Dave! At the auction the coin weight was 26.69. But when I got home and blew it up I knew something was funny.
