Wow ..... I spent this afternoon at work (don't tell my boss) reading the threads in this forum and checking out the great history behind the Classic Commemorative Coins posted here at the CCF.

I am absolutely amazed and spell-bound about the beauty and stories of these coins ...... and am determined to learn enough to make some intelligent purchases of them.

The Oregon Trail really caught my eye ..... as did the Gettysburg Half ... same for the California gold panner coin ....... and ... well .... all of them are intriguing for their history and story.

Sooooo .... I am open for any and all advice you experts can offer to a Commemorative newbie ..... I do not own a single coin (yet) ..

Tell me about ...

Books to learn from

Places to find the real cost of buying these

Favorite coins in your opinion

And anything else that in your view would help an absolute newbie understand the world of Classic US Commemoratives.

I'm fired up to learn more about this and start my newbie collection ...... please give me any advice as you see fit.

Thanks

David

they are beautiful coins aren't they I haven't put together a set yet but I plan on doing so at some time. I started a set a while ago and I got the san diego international exposition coin and the columbian exposition coin but I sold them when I got started on my 1909-1958 lincoln craze.

my favorite coins in the series are the oregon trail, panama pacific exposition, illinois centennial, texas centennial, hudson sesquicentennial, san diego exposition, and the battle of gettysburgh.

really I like most of them my least favorite is the long island tercentenary

I've found them interesting but a little pricey - there are a couple issues that are less costly that I'd be good to start with.

Lafayette, the only coin with a dollar denomination among the classic SILVER commemorative coins.
Rest in Peace

You'll find the cheapest are the Columbus commemorative (1892-1893) and then the Stone Mountain commemorative (1925). I recently completed a whole roll of the Columbus commemoratives at a cost of about US$7.00 a coin. I have gotten others at prices from US$20 to US$100. It depends on the quality and demand with any particular coin. Many are now priced north of US$100 for quality coins. I have been looking for a nice California Jubilee under US$100 for a while now. (Feel free to let me know if you have one!) (available)

Good luck on collecting these, they are a special beautiful part of US history and I predict prices will continue rising on them in the foreseeable future.

some more cheapo's are the Booker T Washington (which is also about the ugliest in my opinion) and the George Washington Carver. The ones I am planning on purchasing is the 1936 Columbia and the 1937 Roanoke Commems because they are close to home (not really about the design)

I'm new as well. I just picked up the 2000 US $1 Leif Ericson Millennium Silver Dollar 2 Piece Set. I'm really satisfied with it and it definitely won't be the last commemorative I buy. I've been ogling the 2009 Lincoln Dollar, also.

The classic commemorative coins are beautiful and very pricey in some cases so I went the other way and built a set of the Modern commemoratives. I buy a few classic commemoratives from time to time but I have only purchased the Stone Mountain MS64, Columbian Expo in both dates and both MS63, Booker Washington 1950 in MS65, and a Washington-Carver 1952 in MS65 and all certified by PCGS.
