We had a very small coin show out in town this last weekend. I visited two dealers' booths and spent about an hour cherry picking a nice stack of Lincolns for my album. It filled a lot of holes and flipping through the book I'm almost done! At least it looked that way, but I just counted the missing holes and there are still 22 remaining. Fortunately all but 2 are newer memorial cents, so we're we're not talking about high dollar items. This is my first attempt to fill an album and I think I picked the biggest beast of them all. I'm anxious to be done with it so I can take some pictures and share them. All of the Wheatbacks are XF-MS and (except for the VDB's) they're all brown. That in itself was work because most of the high grade, later date Wheatbacks have lots of red. I wanted all the Wheats to be brown to create uniformity. All of the Memorials are BU full red. I spent quite a few man hours cherry picking my favorite dealers looking for choice, spot free examples. One in particular had tons of tubed, red Memorials I could sift through. His deal was since I did the work of cherry picking them, he didn't charge me a premium. So, almost done with the BEAST! Next I'm thinking about doing Eisenhower dollars. I think they're cool and it will be a nice break. Plus it won't take years to complete. Any others you might suggest? For the purpose of discussion, do you have any experiences (good, bad or ugy) with albums you wish to share? Morgans look like a nightmare

Franklin halves are a fairly simple set to complete with a tougher set including all proofs or FBLs. Peace dollars are not too bad either and can be completed in AU/MS for only $2-3000. The 7070 type album is a tough but fulfilling undertaking but you really have to familiarize yourself with many different coins so it takes a different level of dedication compared to other albums. The silver Washington quarter set in MS is deceptively difficult, especially for the pre-1940 coins, but it is also not something that requires a huge outlay of cash to complete.

I know the feeling USAP! I'm about 20 coins away from a full set including proofs. All my wheats up to 1934 are xf-ms and from 35 on up spot free gem bu's. I too cherry picked memorials for the real nice ones. I still have the expensive key dates though :(.
Cant wait to see your pics! I am going to pickup a 7070 album and slowly pick on that while I finish my cents. I guess I'm undecided yet on which set I want to start working on.....so many options I just want to do them all at the same time lol!

I'm missing about 25-30 Lincolns in my 1909-1973 album.......it IS a lot of work !.... Just started a Memorial album myself (from circulation) a week or so back......that's been fun......(and a LOT easier !..... ) And my "upgrading" will never end I'm sure, even when I get it completed.

My second* completed album. * Technically, my Jefferson album was first. But it was an ongoing series whereas the Eisenhower and Franklin albums had definite end-points.

Man where to begin.
I echo the sentiment about the franklins. This is doable in ms and you can spend time cherrypicking for fbl coins. I was doing the proofs for the Philly issue but it just got too expensive for the 50 and 51. I gave up andput ms coins in instead. It was a very fun set to put together and I really enjoy looking at it.
As for the ikes, again very fun and affordable!
Morgans. Hmmmmmm....it would definitely be a sight to see. I started out in a dansco but soon learned that there was too much tooling, sliders and cleaning going on that I decided to switch to building a set of pcgs slabs for this. I starts from the keys down, therefore I only have about 20 cons thus far.I say go for it.
As for suggestions, I like peace and walkers in xf or au condition as something that is affordable and fun. Which allows you to keep adding coins consistently without large gaps between purchases.
As for the 7070. I can't say enough. When this is done it will definitely be my pride and joy. I love this album. Love it.
Happy hunting.

I just finished the Ikes! They were important to me, as my Dad, who never had a lot of money, would give me every Ike that crossed his palms, which at his income was generous indeed! Unfortunately, I never kept them because let's face it, when I was 10 they would buy 10 candy bars! Then when I was 13 or 114, they'd buy 3 packs of smokes (O.K., so I never was a helath fanatic ), but now I have a whold set, including proofs and silvers, with all non-proof coins in ms. I put it into a crusty old used Whitman album, which has tears, scars, and is a little wrinkled in places, which kind of reminds me of Dad. Every time I look at them, I remember him pulling those coins out of his pocket, and looking at the moon on the reverse. It's an easy set, sure, but for me an important one!

Hippiebrian, that is one of the best reasons to collect. For me, value is pretty much irrelevant(unless I have to BUY a key date). I roll search exclusively because I like the adventure aspect of collecting coins. Anybody can go buy them if they have enough money but the search for them is the value to me. Each coin has a story. Your coins remind you of the relationship with your dad. Those memories are the things that enrich our lives more than monetary value. Keep collecting for those reasons and you will always be a happy man!

Most excellent, hippiebrian! For those that do not know me yet, my coin collecting interest began when my dad gave me two Eisenhower dollars in 1978. I still have them in my collection. As I said above, the Eisenhower dollar set was my first complete album (including the four extras to fill up the Dansco, which has 36 holes).

Sorry I've been away for a while. I'll post some this weekend. I've decided my next project will be a PCGS type set. Does anyone know if all of the different PCGS designs (from rattlers to today) match up so they can stack together?
