The following auction involves an original 8 Reale altered to make it appear to be rare.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...m=8423987429

In this case the alteration is rather plain - the color around the date and the assayer initials is different from the rest of the coin. But the fact of the matter is that this die style - the "Standard Dies" made at the Mexico City mint were not introduced at the branch mint in Alamos until 1887. This coin has "Dragon's Teeth" the two tiny spikes pointing downward from the cap on either side of the center ray. This anti-counterfeiting device is seen ONLY on Standardized Dies from Mexico City.

The seller is likely the vicitm here. I checked his feedback and he has a positive from "Wondialpercoins" involving a "Private Auction". That seller is a Beijing forger named Zhang Tao (aka Xinhua Zhao). He operates under several ebay identities and sells counterfeits and altered originals mixed with high priced real coins.

I have written to the seller because the price has crossed $400 and because some of the bidders are not counterfeit collectors.

I am giving the seller a chance to respond before I contact ebay.

Well - I have gotten into a discussion with the seller and he refuses to believe that he is selling a fake. Here is the reply:

Item: Mexico 1866 Alamos DL 8 Reales """"RARE COIN""""" AU (8423987429)
This message was sent while the listing was active.
thecoinseeker is the seller.

Hello Mr.Gurney, I bought this coin in Mexico at a jewelry, and it was part of a lot of 127 coins all cap and rays 8,4 and 2 reales. In the lot were 4 rare and scarce coins including this one, I sended the 4 coins to pcgs to be graded, but they only graded 3, and this is the one they did'nt grade, so they send me a little paper explaning why they did'nt graded, and it said it was because it was clean. not because it was a fake, so then I tryed Anacs and the same story.
And about the die style I have the 1867,1868,1870,1878 A DL 8 Reales graded by NGC and Pcgs and they are all exactly the same style, just check the Krause catalog of world coins to see for your self.
Thank you

Here is a story that is hard to believe completely, but has enough "facts" that it might be partially believable. He admits getting the lot from a "jewelry" source - so you know he is into them for small money. Also it is very likely that an altered original would be sold for silver melt - so that is not a surprise. The story about PCGS also sounds rather real - in my opinion, they often cover their lack of expertise in certain series by call a coin cleaned to avoid calling it fake. The ANACS part of the story is a problem however - they usually tackle fakes head on since they do grade cleaned coins. I can not believe they missed such an easy call.

But the seller gives away his total lack of knowledge about Cap and Ray 8Rs by saying that his 1867, 1868, 1870 and 1878 Alamos 8Rs are the "exactly" same style. That's simply wrong because between 1867 and 1878 Alamos revised their design three times. If he can't tell the difference between the 1867 and 1878 styles - he needs to get his eyes checked.

I wrote back and told him he needs a better reference than Krause and gave him the dates for the style changes. I doubt it will have any effect. What I can't believe is a price over $500 for such an obvious piece of junk. My bid would have been $15 because that is what this one is really worth.

If you agree that this is a Standardized Die Strike - write to the guy - perhaps he will take notice if he gets a few similar comments.
