Maybe they thought it would sell better if it were graded lower. A bag of coins can bring down the value real fast especially if we are talking about a point or two.

I watched it last night and one of the younger guys gave the Old Man a present which was a coin but I couldn't see it. They also had some colonial paper money. It was interesting how Franklin used a real leaf to make it counterfeit proof and there was one signature on it besides Franklin's that made it worth a whole lot more. His signature was George Clymer.

I first saw the show a few days after visiting Vegas (May 2009) and staying at the hotel across the street, I was at the Luxor. I know exactly where the shop is, I saw it when I had to go across the street in an incredibly inconvenient way to catch the bus (one way street issues on the strip). Terrible location, right next to a horrid motel. In fact my wife asked me who would stay at such at a horrid place and my guess was Vegas workers. Too bad I hadn't seen the show first, I would have stopped in.

First my apoligies for necroing this thread heheh. Ive been watching this show for awhile now. I really enjoy all the unique items brought in. Anyhow, last nite there was a 32S Washington quarter brought in. This coin ended up being a fake 32s. It had an added mintmark. They showed a closeup of the MM, and it was obvious that the MM was added. The coin had decent luster, except for the MM being surrounded in a field of black gunk from the solder and flux. Also someone brought in a lump of silver rupees from the Taj Mahal shipwreck discovered by Arthur C. Clark. This was a 4-5? pound chunk of rupees that had solidified from the natural electrolysis in the Ocean. The guy wanted 700K $ for it. They store offered 250k. No deal was made. Here's a link to the shipwreck if anyone is interested. The crazy thing is that there was 3 'clumps' of these coins, 1 in the Clark family, 2 the one attempted to be pwned, and the 3rd that was in a Sri Lanka museum. The 3rd was taken back by the sea during the tsunami a few years ago... I guess what the sea wants she gets. http://coins.lakdiva.org/clarke/gre...exhibit.htmlIts cool to see the hobby get some air time.

They just had a 25# clump of rupees from the taj mahul era on there, overed the guy 200,000 for it, he didnt bite. what would a clump of silver coins like that be worth? I keep hitting clumps of coins like that in my garden every spring, annoying to say the least, they break my shovels!...

Where I live in a small town of 23K people most of the pawn shops won't touch coins but if they do they will take them to the one and only local coin and antique shop in town to get them appraised before they would offer you anything. Most of the time they will just tell you to take them to the shop yourself and to work out what ever deal you can. It's funny because I was there to see if they had any to sell as that would be the last type of place where I'd sell coins.
The show is entertaining and over acted like most reality shows.

The link provided mentions at least three more lump clumps. there are probably more not to mention individual coins around.

Chumlee is hilarious on the show. Especially when he manages to break a chair just because he forgot to shut his truckbed.

I thought the son Big Hoss did that?

Maybe it was Big Hoss... He dropped something and crushed a display cabinet on the same episode, I think.

Like anything in life, you should know the true value of it and hopefully the history behind it. The show is just like others, most of it is some type of set up, if you don't believe me, watch it again and the way they do the different interviews. Some guy walks in with an item and when they cut away to the interview he is dressed differently and talking about how is going to get a small fortune. They then cut into the store and the person walks up to one of three people (Big Hoss, Chumle or Rick) and not the other 10 people that work there. If it was real then the cameras would be set up stationary in the store and everyone would be involved. Ans also, why is everything during the day when the place is open 24/7?
As much as I am complaining, I do love the show, but I always pick things apart for some reason.
One last thought: I had to laugh because I was watching a few episodes and watched Rick go from idiot to genious in two episodes. Someone brings in a rifle that was over 250 years old and he had no idea what it was of anything about it, in fact, he thought everything was fake. He calls in an expert that tells him about the history and shows the importance of the piece. A few episodes later someone comes in with a similar weapon and all of a sudden he is the weapons expert of the world. It just made me laugh.

I know what you mean. I see the guys at HSN selling the "Goldmine" State Quarters for $99.95! And, once in a while, I see infomercials with one of the guys off of HSN selling State Quarter Albums.
