Hey Everybody! I recently bought a 1968 S cent, its claimed BU. I feel Lincoln's hair and some letters like WE are not sharp, very similar to a dipped coin I saw before. http://i48.tinypic.com/mcyqtx.jpgYou can tell the differences when comparing this one with a 1970 S: http://i49.tinypic.com/1060jf9.jpgCould somebody please tell me if this 1968 S has ever been cleaned? The master dies were retired in 1968 so that lead to slight design differences with the new master dies. As you noticed, Lincoln's bust was getting quite mushy by that time. It has not been cleaned, it is an original red MS cent.

Exactly what biokemist said. If you notice, all the 1960's cents look like this. The obverse master dies were very worn and most of the reverse dies were also worn. The trick to finding a quality 1968-S is to look for complete steps on the Memorial and an almost hit-free obverse.
On a side note....
After buying/searching many, many BU rolls of 1968-S I finally came upon the sweetest roll in the world just this year. I pulled about 6 coins from it that were ultra gem with complete steps. A lucky few on this forum bought 5 that I didn't need.

biokemist6, thank you very much... Nice shot BadThad, I'll try your trick... but first I have to do some homeworks to know what "complete steps" is...

hi leonardpusher, BadThad's comment about the steps applies to the steps on the Lincoln Memorial, look for fully defined steps.

Here's pics of one of them I sold. Unfortunately, it's inside an Airtight holder since I only photographed it for the sale. The steps are full and complete, it's hard to tell with the holder. Compare this reverse with all the 1968-S's you have and you'll appreciate this coin even more. In hand this coin will blind you with the luster: :

Check out this PCGS MS67 RD: http://coins.ha.com/common/view_ite...8&Lot_No=274The only reason this coin got 67 is because of the luster. It's proof-like. There's a lot of contact marks and an odd darkish discoloration on the reverse. It's also weak around the middle of the building....which is typical on these. The steps are pretty good for this issue, but notice the two weak bands the steps. This coin would not meet my definition of full steps. There's a lot of contact marks on the building. THANKS TGP's! Another coin graded mostly by luster.
