Hello folks,
This is my first posting here. I normally collect arrowheads that I find in muddy fields, where this coin came from. Historically this field is near a ferry used to cross the Potomac River during the civil war. I have been told it is a half reale, from 1793 or so, probably manufactured in Guadeloupe with a counter-stamp. OK so all that is understood. The big mystery is the counter-stamp. I have been told that the RF signifier is supposed to be in a circle and not a bar format. Can anyone out there give me some insight into this?

-Glenn
BTW I found two large square stemmed late archaic points on the same day.

Peter,

Sorry about the last post, the reading on the mic is .689 in. That last one didn't look right.

thankyou: I was wondering if it might be something other than Spanish, but the reverse pic settles that point conclusively.

Back to the counterstamp "RF" - the only thing that springs to my mind is "Republique Francaise".
The French have minted coins almost continuously since the middle ages, with a gap from about 1793 to 1800 or so: the period of "The Directory", after the Revolution, but before the rise of Napoleon.
So, perhaps your Spanish coin was monetized by the French at some point ?

Thanks Peter,
I spoke with a guy at a coin show in Annandale, Va earlier today. He concurs with your opinion, stating it most probably was minted in Mexico and counter-stamped in either Guadeloupe or Martinique. He also told me it was a scarce stamping, but didn't go into its specific value.

I know this post is old, but I just came upon it while researching my counterstamped half reale. Mine is dated 1789, yours is actually 1789 or earlier. King Charles III passed away that year and King Charles IV took over. My half reale is stamped IV over III.
