Just when I thought I had a half way idea, and it's a small idea of what I was doing in my new hobby, along comes this thread. So by what I have read so far I need to get the book that these two guys wrote to figure all this out. Is there someplace on-line that I can learn what all these numbers mean and what to look for on my Morgans and Peace dollars?

Oh My! the book you are referring to is the Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace dollars by Leroy van Allen and George a Mallis and even though this is a great book it is still just a starting point and not even the authors themselves probably know each and every VAM just by looking at a coin. In my case I chose 1878 Morgans to study and just for 1878-P Morgans there are over 200 VAM numbers assigned with more being found all the time and this isn't including the 7/8Tf or the 8TF 1878 Morgans so as you could guess this is a very big book and unless you have a photographic memory it would be hard to even remember one date or even the major ones not to mantion each and every VAM there is. Another place that is a good place to go is VAMworld on the net and they have allot of the VAM's listed and show attributes of those specific VAM's on their site
