After working on a new coin shot today, I thought I'd highlight a great coin series for finding die varieties like overdates. The Peru silver 1/2 Dinero was minted up to 1917, and within the 1901-17 period alone, there are a staggering 42 overdates! Many overdates are common, with a few scarcer varities. Despite the small 15mm size (1.25gr), it's a very interesting coin to study for overdates, misspelled legends, signs of rusty dies, and clashes. I found a nice MS group where the minute details stand out.

The coin above is a 1900/1890 overdate (detail):

Yes it appears the Peru mint was less concerned than Copenhagen.
Of course, Colombia is a little worse still...

Hello.

Is there a reference book that lists the known varieties/overdates for the 1/2 Dinero series. I am just examining several pieces that I obtained while working in Peru 1975-1979 and find the "errors" fascinating.

Many thanks. Alan

Hello, DVcollector.

Thanks so much for sharing the information about varieties of the 1/2 dinero pieces of Peru. I will be examining the other pieces I have when I have a bit of spare time to see what other "goodies" pop up under magnification.

Again, thanks. Alan in Massachusetts
