Hi Johnny, At that price I don't see how you could go wrong. I'm looking forward to seeing better photos when you get the coin, but the color looks excellent and color is a big deal for Charlotte and Dahlonega gold. The deep greenish-gold color is very desirable and suggests the surfaces are close to original. There appears to be some luster in the protected areas. Hopefully the hairlines are shallow and won't be much of a distraction. Grading these coins is very subjective and is strongly affected by the strike characteristics for each date and denomination. Douglas Winter's book on Dahlonega gold states that the 1844-D $5 is normally pretty well struck, except for typical weakness on the eagle's upper leg. Your coin appears to have weak detail in Liberty's hair above the coronet so maybe that is what prompted a VF Details grade. Overall the coin looks to be at least EF. Here's my chance to show off my lone Dahlonega coin, graded XF-40 by PCGS. Winter states that the 1857-D $5 often has weakness in the hair curl on Liberty's neck and on the eagle claws and the arrow feathers; my coin shows these characteristics. Your coin looks comparable to mine in terms of overall wear. I love these coins and I'm sure you will take great pride in ownership for your new acquisition. Congrats!

Nice buy! I seen your post when you first put it up and did an advanced search on ebay to include ended auctions and saw it. I was thinking about being a smart alec and messing with you a bit and hitting the nail on the head but didn't want to spoil it for everyone else. It looks really nice and someday I hope and can acquire some gold.

Very nice Jaobler! I love your example, and it will be interesting to compare mine with yours once I receive it.
Thank you all for your comments! MattDrew, yeah, anyone can "cheat" and look in the archives; and I would have assumed you did if you guessed right on the money...lol. I am still a bit nervous as it seems kind of "too good to be true"; but we'll see.

I received the coin today! I'm VERY pleased overall. The coin has no abrasive hairlines, and the color seems good overall. Light olive tinge, with orange/brown highlights around the stars/lettering and devices. It may have been dipped or wiped at some point, but I've seen way worse in problem free plastic. I think I do agree with their grade of VF, but just barely. Wear on the obverse liberty hair I believe holds it back just a tad...so I'd say VF-35, though it would compare with some overgraded XFs of yore. NGC sure didn't give this coin any preferential treatment for being a better date like they used to. There is a fair amount of luster remaining around the devices/stars/ and especially the reverse lettering. Enough on the reverse to give a very mild cartwheel affect under the right lighting. Overall I am VERY pleased!

Here are a couple more shots with direct lighting. It brings out the luster and details better, but also makes the "hits" look larger than they appear in hand.

Fantastic Coin Johnny! I have been dreaming of a D and C Half Eagle for a while now...but for now it will remain a dream! Congrats on a great purchase.

Thanks Cownas! It has seen it's fair share of circulation, and it's definitely not as high quality as Jaobler's example. However, it fairs well as a choice VF. Here is a PCGS VF-35 that is similar in terms of detail and contact marks.

Your coin looks very choice, very fine (VF35)! Perfect for Christmas!
And again for 30% of the problem-free price, that's a good deal.

Well, you all may be disappointed in me, but the coin has been sold. It went for $1,162. I couldn't resist the profit($500). Don't worry though, the profit will likely go back into coins. :-)

It would be tough for me too, That realized amount would put you well on your way to a problem free XF D Half Eagle!
