Is this the real thing? Any idea about grade? Something about the mintmark doesn't look right. Looks too high. Edited by AGCoinHunter 03/18/2010 2:37 pm

The "D" is normally in this high position. Looks very similar to one I have that has been authenticated at FR2. Tou actually have more "D" showing than mine. Might fall into the AG3 group. nlp

No, dealer near me has it for sale. Was thinking about buying it. Problem is, its raw. No slab. Very weary of buying a raw key like this.

I definitely understand that! Will the dealer will stand behind it long enough for you to send it for certification? Maybe he would send it in if you offered to pay the fee.

The MM seems to have notches in it kind of like if it was an RPM. Thats what has me concerned. The question is what is the dealer charging for this one and can you get a certified piece for the same or just a small amount over. Obviously if you can get a certified piece go that route. Here is my PCGS G4 for comparison

That's the real deal, but I would say nothing higher than G. Red Book lists 1916-D G-4 value at $1,000.00.

Here's a FR-02 1916D Mercury for comparison. Yours looks real and at a correct grade.

I would steer clear. I'm not sure what is going on, but if I had to take a guess, I would say it is a 1916-s that someone made to "look" like a 1916-d. With that much wear, you are dealing with the diagnostics of a little blob of metal; and the "s" and "d" start to become more and more difficult to distinguish between.

My dealer won't touch them unless they're slabbed... doesn't care how they look, says he's seen hundreds of them -- all fake. (By the way, I've taken him FOUR from granddad's collection so far... 3 fakes with one out at ANACS... probably will be fake, too)
