I am thinking about bidding on this but since I am a "newbie" I wanted to get your opinions. I looked at the zoom feature and the coin has a few dings and nicks and a line across the face. I would grade it a F-12 to VF-20. Am I wrong? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWAX:ITThanks, Wornslick Edited by Wornslick 12/18/2009 10:00 pm

That coin is EF at least, maybe AU. It has been cleaned and has a nasty scratch though, so it should be priced accordingly.
I wouldn't go over $40 on it, but if you really want it, maybe $50 tops. It's easily a $150 coin without the problems.

Nice coin, I agree it's been cleaned at some point. I would say EF-45.

Thanks for the opinions and the advice. Speaking of cleaning, is there a thread on this site that explains what to look for as far as a coin that has been cleaned? Like what to look for. Thanks,

cleaning takes experience to detect is some cases like the coin you are asking about. Some coins have scratches that are all going in one direction on the coin and that is a great indicator that that particular coin had been harshly cleaned at one time. With copper its all about the color. A cleaned/dipped copper coin will have a pinkish color to it and most people call it a salmon color instead of the dark color copper would turn

I do see a "pinkish tint" to the coin pic I posted. The scratches on the coin do not seem to be going the same way however. I guess practice makes perfect.

The coin does not appear to me to have been chemically cleaned, what I see are evidences that may be thumbing on the obverse and the same only slightly less on the reverse as to the time when this occured it could be recent it could have been many years ago.
pictures such as the ones that are on the auction make it very hard to be completely sure about the actual color of the coin.
this coin could be darker or lighter than it appears in the photo.
the scratch is what would cause me to consider if I wanted the coin or not, its directly acrossed the main focal point of the obverse.

Problem coin and no bargain to boot. I would advise to walk away. I would bet it will still realize $70+ for a coin that if at a show wouldn't bring 35. Cleaned, scratched, and the common sister of the two major varieties for the year. Sorry if so blunt as you sound exited. Just make sure you view these coins in person first. Then buy from satellite once you know more of a feel for the positives and negatives that the series holds. Such personality from each one that glamour shots on ebay make them all look like kings....Buyer beware for sure on Half Cents.
