I am looking for some input as to what may have happened to the reverse side of this coin? My thoughts are a poor attempt at cleaning.

. I bought one on the cheap that looked similar to this. It had tape residue on it. I soaked in some acetone and it turned out nice.

Try the acetone, but it looks to me like the tape was on so long, it may have toned around it, in which case, acetone and time...

Yeah, the net result might be a coin with a toning pattern that's a negative of the current look.

I agree, tape residue. I've never had a coin with tape residue before myself, but like everyone else said,I hear aceton can work magic on coins with that problem
