Hello, I am a beginner collector and needing some advice on the purchase of a 2009 State Quarter set. I need to know? Is there a big difference between the Clad variety and the silver variety of this set? I made an offer on a clad 6 coin set 2009 American Samoa Quarter PCGS PR70 DCAM
2009 District of Columbia Quarter PCGS PR70 DCAM
2009 Guam Quarter PCGS PR70 DCAM
2009 Northern Marianas Quarter PCGS PR70 DCAM
2009 Puerto Rico Quarter PCGS PR70 DCAM
2009 Virgin Islands Quarter PCGS PR70 DCAM
and I thought that this was a silver set of coins.
Could someone tell me the difference in the value of the 2 different types (clad and silver) and what I should expect to pay for a set of these 6 coins in each variety? Listing the most I should pay and what you would consider to be a bargain.
Thanks everyone, It sure is tough starting out collecting coins when you have as little knowledge about coins as I do. But I have a 10 year old son and would really like to get him into collecting and leave behind some good coins for him when I kick the bucket.

I do not know what kind of price you are looking at on a set of PR70 PCGS coins but you can still purchase the sets directly from the US Mint. The clad version is $14.95 and the 90% silver version is $29.95. I guarantee you will have a hard time finding any difference between a graded PR70 and the coins still in a proof set and I am sure the proof set will cost considerably less. Now I am not telling what to collect, only you can decide that, but I wish to inform you of what may be a more cost-effective option that would leave you more money to spend on other coins

As for the State/Territory quarter series in general, the silver versions have tended to hold their value a bit better than the clad because of the silver content and lower overall mintages. Prices for graded 2009s have not stabilized yet since they are still readily available so you may buy now only to find out six months from now they are worth less than what you paid. You may also find that they have gone up in value. Pricing on high grade modern coins tends to be quite volatile and sometimes it is difficult to justify paying multiple times the cost of a PR69 in order to get a PR70 when the actual differences are incredibly minute.

I agree with the above, personaly I would not shell out the big bucks for pr70 graded examples when you can still purchase them from the mint. Unless your working on a registry set.

Thanks everyone for all the great information, I really do appreciate it. I had made the offer of $245.00 for the 6 coin set and the seller was willing to accept very quickly but I told him that I would like to think about it and I would get back with him. And after reading these replies I am glad I didn't go through with it.
Thanks again everyone. You saved me some bucks.
