Hey, all! I have some questions about restored date coins. Specifically, I've seen Buffalo nickels on ebay with restored dates.

How is this done? Presumably, the date is missing not because of grime around it that obscures the numerals but because they have worn away. Does the date stamping leave a memory in the metal below the numerals that can somehow be recovered?

I have heard that Buffalo nickels are one of two coins that have greysheet values without a date (what is the other one? early standing liberties?). Are these worth something specifically beause the date can be recovered or because people want to own the coin, even without a date? The question follows: should I leave my dateless nickels as is or attempt to get their dates restored? How much less is a restored date coin than it's natural counterpart?

Thanks in advance.

Peace

There's stuff called "Nic-A-Date" that can sometimes restore the dates on these nickels. While it's usually not a good idea to use stuff like this on coins because they can damage the coins and lower value, dateless Buffs tend to have almost no value anyway, so you're not really hurting much. You should be able to get it for $5 or less.

About the only Buffs I would NOT use this product on to restore the date are (a) Type 1 reverses (since you know the date is 1913 already), and (b) "D" mintmarked coins with a three-legged bison on the reverse.

Nic-A-Date is basically an etching acid so it will physically damage the coin where applied, but who really cares when it is a dateless Buff anyway I dont think it works well enough to be able to detect an overdate or something like that but it should be somewhat readable at least. And, yes, many early SLQs are dateless as well.

Hi texasmick

Some of the dateless buffalos can be Identified as a certian date and variety,,Like the 1913 variety 1 , these coins sometimes can have the date restored to readable by using nic-a-date and could be used in a type set or something ,, but IMO its an altered coin , and would have less value than a dateless 1913 var.1 without a date.

same thing would apply to the var 1 SLQ they can sometimes be Identified without a date based on stars or no stars below the eagle.
