During our recent trip to Europe I noticed an advertising blitz by the credit card companies. Billboards in many different countries were sending a message. Examples of the billboard advertising: "Coins Get Lost!" "Money Stinks!" Will coins become a thing of the past?

I don't think they are going anywhere. I believe our own US 1 cent will be minted for a long while to come. I heard or read somewhere that it may be redesigned for 2009 for the 100th anniv. of the Lincoln design. The State Quarters the new dollars coming out, the new designs will keep people interested and will continue to keep the acceptance beyond coin collectors.

I like Old Dan's thinking.
I think money will be gone by the end of my lifetime. Maybe not some of the others here, but I think it will happen.
The majority of people will probably want convenience. They don't care who's on what or what the mint will come out with in hopes for people to hoard.
It would be so much easier to just swipe and go, rather than paying with $8.32 with a five, three ones, a quarter, nickel, and three pennies (which is another topic of discussion). Just swipe and go.
Conveniently, my girlfriend only has her plastic, never paper.
I prefer paper, I normally carry a large stash "just incase", and I always get sucked into buying the stuff for her that won't take plastic.
But she is already doing it, as do a lot of friends. It just easier to work with, keep track of, quicker. She will spend 15 minutes deciding which shade of white laces to buy for her shoes, but when shes done, it's go time. SHe doesn't want to spend the extra 15 seconds in the checkout line.
So yes, I think it will happen. I do not want it to, but I believe it's inevitable.

Most people already have a tracking chip in their hand, it's their cell phone. "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength." George Orwell--1984

Yes, that's exactly what they're promoting big time in europe right now. They want everyone to be chipped. They're starting with animals; under the NAIS program in the U.S. (strangely enough, just made by bureacratic decisions so far and no actual law behind it), all animals (with very few exceptions) will need to be registered and most chipped. Under the RealID Act, there's a fairly good chance chips will be placed in driver's licenses (now your national ID card)and they're trying to convince people to accept them too--to "protect" the elderly, children, etc. It's all about tracking and control of people. Big Brother is here. For what it's worth, I will never use one of these chips, and I don't even use a credit or debit card...it pays to know exactly what's going on. Many Christians, myself included, suspect it's possibly the "Mark of the Beast" mentioned in Revelations ch. 13. It certainly fits well. This person ain't gonna stop using coins.

On the front page of May 29th's CoinWorld is an article which says in part Rep. Kolbe, R-Ariz. plans on introducing legislation calling for the elimination of the cent and give the mint more flexibility in the use of alloys for use in production of other denominations.

As we become more and more of a surveillance state, I expect that the government will take covert steps toward reducing or eliminating the use of cash in transactions. They will want to steer us toward electronic monetary exchanges that they can track -- who paid what, *for* what, and when.
I doubt they'll be too point blank about doing this since privacy advocates would be up in arms about the loss of an option for anonymous transactions, but make no mistake, I suspect actual hard cash will become more and more de-emphasized even if the government has to develop carrots and sticks to get us there.

Ziggy that was my first thought when they came out with the EZPASS for tolls. I use it but it keeps track of whare you are and when and sooner or later a good divorce lawyer wii get ahold of these records. As much as I would hate to see it when it costs more then a cent to make one we have to think about stopping production. Perhaps only produce them for mint and proof sets.

Not only that, but it also lets them track your speed from one point to another and they could theoretically mail you a ticket if they feel like it (assuming current law permitted it in that jurisdiction).

We'll be fortunate if chipping "ideas" stop at speeding tickets. But just in case it does't stop there, and since it will be too late for the dolts running their heads over a Wal-mart scanner, some darker possibilities have been, as the Gestapo used to say: "all been recorded." It's the Star Trek episode called The Gamesters of Triskelion. Just substitute a chip for a dog collar. http://locutus.pos.to/tv/2/44triskelion.jpg"War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength." George Orwell--1984
