I picked this one up last night for 40 dollars. I had already picked up a pretty nice 1862 for my Dansco 7070, but I think this one will end up in the album instead....unless it's even more incredible in hand than the pictures reveal, then maybe it will be the 4th coin that I'll submit to PCGS with my initial membership.

In playing with the photo software, I think that's unbroken mint luster across Liberty's foot, and it has a pretty strong die clash evident as well. This is the picture I bought it from. I'll take some good ones when it arrives. It's not a real strong strike, but I've seen some PCGS slabbed 65s that aren't well struck either. It will be interesting to see what it's really like when it arrives.

I also picked up an 1858-O from the same seller that's very close to this grade.

Honestly, by the way the coin reflects light in this picture, it appears whizzed to me. Hopefully I'm wrong, but if not your not out much at $40 and probably still worth it for the details. Any pics of the reverse?

There was no picture of the reverse. We shall see when it arrives if it's been whizzed. I don't believe this coin has been....unless your definition of whizzed is different than what I am thinking. I bought a Shield nickel that was supposed to be AU once...and ended up sending it back. The entire field had been mechanically lowered, and it was done pretty well, but didn't look right. To the naked eye...you couldn't see it. That is what I thought "whizzed" meant...or is it a generic term assigned to any of a number of mechanical alterations to a coin's surfaces?

With a 50X loupe...the work on the nickel was obvious. The seller refunded my purchase price, including postage both ways.

Here's the 58-O I got from the same guy.
