This is hard. I feel like I am looking a gift horse in the mouth, so the saying goes. I just spent the last 4 hours scouring every photo and piece of text I could find to authenticate. I'm pretty sure I know what I am going to hear here. here hear! Send it to a grading service, you say? For Sure! (Not PCGS, after reading the about a svdb recently sent there for grading.) after... I am reasonably confident it is real, which I am not. I think it is inconclusive, without sending it out. I should just have her send it back now? First problem is it came from ebay. Anyways, the mint mark is smashed, thats all I can find wrong with it, that's all? Well, besides the previous cleaning/buffing, scratches in the bust and <VG condition. Obverse Reverse MM MM MM MM

If this helps, here are the 4 documented mm positions for the 1909-S VDB

Yes it helps, Thank you. I found that in another thread on this forum. The coin appears to me to match Obverse#3 to a "T"

I'm crossing my fingers for you papasteeze! (I'm the guy with the "ungraded" PCGS 09-S) Ungraded or graded, it's still pretty darn cool to have!

This is "papasteeze's" photo super imposed over "obverse #3" with transparency and edge detection. It appears to match perfectly except the smashed m/m is slightly wider. Much easier to see when you can move each image independently.

papasteeze, I think adco1149's digital work should give you comfort (which is awesome btw - thanks for doing that for us newbies) that what you have is genuine. But, as you stated, a grading service is going to be the ultimate answer on this. Have you decided who you are going to send it to?

Oh WOW ADCO!! so smart! I have studied so many images, why didn't I think of that? I presume you are changing the opaqueness in something like photoshop and then pasting over. I am not familiar with edge detection...
Anyway. Thank you, thank you! I am feeling much better about this coin now.
I found a suggestion to test the coin with acetone to see if the MM was glued on and that there was still a possibility that some type of copper "flash" could have been used for adhesion. Though it seems to me that accuracy in placement of the MM would be hit or miss, more often miss.
In one of the photos above, one thing that continues to concern me is the "tennis shoe tread mark" that is most visible to the left of the MM - any ideas?
Lastly, Is anyone aware of the other additional markers that go along with Obverse#3 that they would care to share?
thank you again for helping out a new member!

Sorry Clinton, I missed a reply to you. If I do send it out. I am guessing the lesser of the big 3. Memebership, lack of coin dealers in close proximity, cost, being the reasons..... ANACS. I guess, at this point now, I don't really care about the grade so much because I can't ever see selling it. Afterall, its filling a 40 year old hole which is better now than it was 10 years ago! jokes.... hahaha On the other hand, if I can tie it to a genuine certification.... for the prices I see ebay climb up to....

Rob, I use Corel Photopaint, that is much less expensive that Photoshop.
Yes just paste over the top and adjust transparency, re-size and rotate as needed. The edge detection was used just to combine images with clarity for posting here.
When you can move the images independently it becomes much easier to see. Also you can see the rim of the coin (lower right) is also well aligned. I think the accuracy that it would take to place the m/m should give you comfort.
anyway my pleasure, I love doing this stuff.

VF-25 hahahah yeah VG8 maybe.. BTW looooove all those pics of the most awesome Lincolns I have ever seen in that other 14 page thread. I read every page. I am still sitting on the fence. I going to try and take some shots of the mint mark through a loupe at an angle ILO of a microscope, to see if I can see anything.

The lines in the wheat ears are fully separated, that automatically puts it above a VG technical grade. If you are net grading, it would probably be knocked down to VG with the scratches and cleaning.
