Hi all. This is my first post here. I have a question that has been bugging me and it seems like this may be the place to have a question answered by collectors who know their business.

I have an old $5 gold indian dated 1914D. It weighs and measures right and is in AU condition. The odd thing is that it has a "pinched" look around the edge on one side of the coin...kind of like a partial ring that comes in from the edge to about the mid-point of the stars on the front. The rim is fine and the coin is undamaged. The deformation I'm talking about is evident in the coin used for the forums $5 Indian example pic as well.

This seems to be original to the minting process. I have seen images of other indian coins with this characterstic. Is this an oddity caused by the incused minting method that normal raised relief coins do not have? The D mintmark is also not too well defined in spite of it's high relief. Thoughts?

I know what you are talking about, and have seen that on many problem free gold indian coins. Not quite sure what causes it, but something with the striking process.

there could be many things causing what you explain from a clipped planchet to ex jewelery but it would take a picture to be sure exactly what could cause what you describe

If the coin looks like the one in the forum photo's its an anomoly which I attribute to die pressures and wear.

in other words its normal.

I have no decent camera to get the quality of images typically seen here. My coin looks like the one in the forum history section which I have pasted in below. The irregular pinched area on mine at the edge looks just like that seen in the image below except it comes a little further in from the edge at the stars and less on the off-side. This is basically what I am seeing though.

$5-Gold-Indian-With-Edge-Irregularity.-Why?

Thanks for the input
