I don't understand the thing with 1780 Maria Theresa Silver Thaler. Some go for 30$ other like this for over a 100$ http://cgi.ebay.com/1780-Maria-Ther...-R_W0QQitemZ110473640505QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCoins_US_Individual?hash=item19b8bdfa39#ht_2674wt_958 . So are they reprints and how do you distinguish original from a reprint? Thank you

I am pretty sure that is an original. Swamperbob outlined all of the key restrike features in a post from a few months ago. One of the key features is the spelling of "AUST"- is is "AVST" on the restrikes.

Podoprigora As pointed out by biokemist6 I have written often about the Maria Theresa Thaler. I have been interested in the series since I first ran into one in a small shop back in the 1960's. I bought it for $1. In that case, the dealer (who was unfamiliar with world coins) knew only that it was a coin that had circulated but he couldn't tell me how old the coin actually was.

The thread biokemist6 points out gives some of the basics of identification.

The earlier restrikes are often scarce. Every once in a while I bid on one. I have been working on my Hafner set for many years. As it turns out - I was the winner of the coin you refer to. It is a Hafner #28. It is a variety I have never owned.

This particular coin was struck in Gunzburg, Austria between 1789 and 1792. It is not technically an original but falls into the "almost original" category (my own designation). It is one of VERY few Postumous dies that uses a you is AUST as opposed to a V in AVST. The vast majority of restrikes have the V. It is always best to examine an MTT with a you very closely.

If you or anyone needs help with the MTT series just drop me a line.
